Sustainability isn't just about buying organic cotton clothing. The key to sustainability is extending the life of the clothing pieces we already have in our wardrobes through proper care.
Start with the care label on your particular garment. “Organic cotton” alone does not determine whether an item can be machine washed, tumble dried or ironed. Fabric construction, colour and other components also matter.
1. Low wash temperatures are essential
Follow the temperature and programme on the care label. If it permits washing at 30 °C, choose a gentle programme and wash similar colours together. Do not exceed the stated maximum temperature.
2. Avoid harsh chemicals
Use a detergent suitable for the colour and fabric, following its dosage instructions. Use bleach only if the care label allows it. Organic cotton may still undergo dyeing and other finishing processes.
3. Air dry whenever possible
Organic cotton is best dried in the fresh air. High heat from a tumble dryer can cause shrinkage and degrade the fabric faster. To avoid wrinkles, smooth out the garment and lay it flat to dry.
4. Store correctly in your wardrobe
To maintain the vibrant colors of your organic cotton clothing, store it in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight. Fold heavier pieces, such as sweaters, instead of hanging them to prevent stretching.
5. Gentle ironing and steaming
Follow the care label for ironing temperature and whether steam is suitable. Test a small, inconspicuous area first and do not exceed the recommended setting.
6. Always check the care label
Check the label before washing, drying or ironing. If it is missing or unreadable, check the product information or ask us about your particular design.
